A former veterinarian with more than 20 years of experience in vitrification research, Dr Kuwayama got his start in 1986 when he worked for a department of Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture and, with his colleagues, demonstrated that live calves could be born from eggs frozen before fertilization.
In 1999 Dr Kuwayama began his research on human reproduction and shortly after achieved oocytes vitrification. In 2000, he developed clinical vitrification method for human oocytes and embryos and, in 2001, established the innovative human egg bank to support cancer patients as well as healthy working women.
His current Cryotec vitrification method was invented in 2012 and led to significant improvements in solutions and instrumentation. This new method is highly effective and has been used in over 1,000,000 clinical cases in over 60 countries.
When he is researching, his thoughts are with the patients around the world whose lives are in the dark because they struggle to have children. His motivation is to make these people’s wishes for a child come true with the help of cryopreservation technology
